Evaluating Websites

I have chosen the topic `First Aid’ to work with my students at secondary school. In order to evaluate the webpages to work on, I have followed the standard criteria developed by Dudeney & Hockley (2007)


1.      10 Most Common Accidents in the Home and How to Treat Them. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.benenden.co.uk/be-healthy/lifestyle/10-most-common-accidents-in-the-home-and-how-to-treat-them/
    


·                 Accuracy: 

Beneath Health is a mutual society in the UK which provides private
medical cover. It was founded in 1905. This mutual organization is run by
its 800,000 members. Bob Andrews is the chief Executive Officer.
The page content is reliable and factually correct.
There is cross-reference with other similar websites.

·       Currency:

There are other reliable sources such as https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/baby-safety-tips/ 
against which factual information can be checked.
There is no reference when it was last updated

·       Content:

The site is appealing; easy to navigate. It is very clear and the information is organized. The language is not complex and it reads smoothly.

·       Functionality:

 The site works well and there are no broken links.

2. Wound Care: Your Essential First Aid Care Guide. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/wound-care-10/preventing-common-home-injuries
  



 ·       Accuracy: 

WebMD is run by a team of over 100 nationwide doctors and health experts across a broad range of specialty areas.
There is an `about us’ link that provides information about the members of the WebMd.com
The site is a reliable source since a team of doctors and health experts are responsible for the content of the page.
This site contains cross-references with other similar websites which sponsor WebMD.com.

·       Currency:
WEbmd.com was last reviewed by Tyler Wheeler, MD on December 10, 2018

·       Content:
The page is interesting, colourful, and easy to navigate. The content is easy to understand and supported by pictures and videos. The only drawback is that there are lots advertisements pop-ups, as this webpage is sponsored by many commercial organizations dedicated to providing health and lifestyle information.

·       Functionality
There are no broken links. 


·       Accuracy:

The AboutKidsHealth consists of a team of health-care professionals who work closely at The Hospital for Sick Children. It is a health education resource for children, youth and caregivers that is approved by the professionals at The Hospital for Sick Children, which makes it a reliable and factually correct source.
There is no cross reference with other similar websites.

·       Currency:

The content was last updated April, 2013

·       Content:
       
It is an easy website to navigate; the font size is big enough. The picture is very clear.
It is an interesting website to visit.

·       Functionality:
       
It works well; there are no broken links.

 4. No first aid kit? No problem! (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.redcross.org.uk/first-aid/no-first-aid-kit-no-problem



  
·       Accuracy:

This webpage is run by the British Red Cross Society, incorporated by Royal Charter 1908. This Red Cross Society is led by a board of trustees who are all selected for their expertise.
There is an ‘about us’ link that leads you to who makes up the British Cross Society and who the trustees are.
The page content is reliable and factually correct since it meets the requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.  
There are no cross-references with other similar websites. It is a self-contained site which provides all the necessary information about health and safety.  

·       Currency:
       
The content is updated. It was last updated at the beginning of this year. The executive leadership team is responsible for the day-to-day management and update of the organization.

·       Content:
      
The webpage is interesting at first sight: it is neatly organized, the language is very clear and easy to follow.
It is very easy to navigate.
Nice visual structure.
Links are grouped under their corresponding heading.

·       Functionality:

The site works very well. There are no broken links.
There are files that can be downloaded.
There are videos that illustrate the content.

·       Accuracy: 
        
St John Ambulance is the name of a number of affiliated organizations in different countries which teach and provide first aid and emergency medical services. It is staffed by volunteers. There is an `About us’ link which provides detail about this site.
The content is reliable and factually correct since it is run by experts in emergency matters.   
·       Content:
It is a very nice site to work on. Although it has not been designed especially for foreign students of English, the content is appealing and easy to follow. There are pictures and videos that back up the information. 
 It is neatly organized. There is a scroll-down list of emergencies on the left and on the right the page displays all the information related to the item selected, which makes it easy to navigate.
·       Functionality:
The page works well. There are no broken links.

6. Oldani, P. (2019, April 13). How to create a first aid kit for the everyday and the extreme. Retrieved from https://insidefirstaid.com/first-aid-kit/how-to-create-your-personal-first-aid-kit



·       Accuracy:

Insidefirstaid.com was designed by Peter Oldani, who graduated from the University at Buffalo with a B.S. in biomedical engineering. He is an expert in this field since he worked as an emergency medical technician. There is an ‘About us’ link which provides a fully detailed biography about the author.
The content is reliable and factually correct since the information is solely administered by the author.
There are cross-references with other websites at the end of each article.

The site is interesting and motivating. There are pictures providing support to the theory. The information is easy to understand; there are step-by-step instructions on recognizing and treating common medical emergencies. However, the language is not graded for students. Articles have not been written taking into account student`s language competence, but the website is aimed at the general audience. Therefore, students will need teacher`s guidance and help as regards language.

The webpage works well, there are no broken links.

  •        Accuracy:

This site has been designed by a team of experts in home security. The article about home accidents has been written by Kimberly Alt. Se is a home security expert. She has more than a decade of experience in home security. There is an ‘ About us’ link providing full details about the author of this page.
The page content is reliable since the authors are experts in this field and has wide experience in dealing with home security.

The article was written May, 2007. However, the page content was updated last May, 2019. New articles have been uploaded.
·       
  • Content:

The site is interesting and easy to navigate. There are videos and pictures supporting the information provided. The content is neatly organized and it reads smoothly. Although it is not aimed at foreign students, they can easily understand it.

  •   Functionality:

It works well, there are no broken links

  • Accuracy

This page is run by Lord MackKenzie who has been the president of RoSPA since November 2013. He has ministerial responsibility for safety and health at work. The page content is also administered by other trustees who are also experts in home safety and prevention. There is an ‘ About us’ link which provides fully detailed information about the president and trustees.
The page content is reliable and factually correct.
  • Currency:

The page was last updated 18/06/2019. There is cross- reference with other websites at the end of the article.
  • Content:

The content reads smoothly and it is very easy to follow. It has not been designed to foreign students but the language used is easy understand. There are pictures that back up the information provided.

  • Functionality:

The page works well. There are no broken links.

  • Accuracy
Mumsnet was created by Justine Roberts, who came up with the idea of a website to help parents to prevent home accidents. There is no ‘ About me’ link, in order to know who created this page, I had to search it on the net. For this reason, I believe this is an example of a non-reliable website. Besides, there is no much information about the author on the net. I would not include this site in my lesson plans.

  • Currency

There is no reference as regards the date it was last updated.
We cannot check the facts against other reliable resources.

  • Content:

The site looks interesting and very easy to navigate. The texts are easy to follow, but as there are no authors, we do not know exactly who wrote it.

  • Functionality

The page works well. There are no broken links.



  • Accuracy:

 www.niderect.gov.uk is a Northern Ireland government website managed by the Executive Information Service. There is an ‘ About us’ link that provides information about the organization which runs this website.
There is cross reference to other reliable sources such as gov.uk and nibusinessinfo.gov.uk

  • Currency:
There is not date indicating when it was last updated
There are other sources against which this source can be checked.

  • Content:

The site is very easy to follow and navigate. The content is supported by videos and other links. Although it is not aimed at foreigner students, the language is very easy to understand.

  • Functionality:

The site works well; there are no broken links.
There are videos which are quite interesting and give further support to the theory. They videos work well.
